Mixing Art, Dance, Visual Theater and Music – National College “Saint Sava”

We did mix different types of arts!

We have signed up for this year’s Erasmus experience in San Remo because of the challenges it implied and because we could even present a theatre play, our special. We like to provoke ourselves and get out of our comfort zone with each occasion we get.

One of the biggest obstacles this year was creating the artistic moment, talking from multiple standpoints. Being original and being historically correct simultaneously in our play was one of the hardest criteria we had to accomplish.

And our solution to this problem was combining different arts with theatre. Indeed a great idea, because theatre can easily mold and be even greater than before.

For example, we have combined theatre with film by using the provided projector and speakers from the San Remo Theatre (and of course the stage for the play itself). By using film, we could inform our spectators more easily about Queen Mary’s journey and better help them understand what is going on in the show itself.

The films used during the play were not made by us, but by trusted sources as they are official videos. They acted more as documentaries as one of our objectives was to spread some interesting fun facts from Romanian history and culture (as this was the purpose of the Erasmus project itself).

We have used music too, along with our play. Because some of our scenes were muted (no conversation from the characters), we were able to play songs to furthermore animate the stage and amplify the feelings in the play (we used internationally well-known sound effects, for example, or another example, we used the United Kingdom’s anthem when we mentioned famous people from the UK).

Our play was a mixture between muted theatre and classic usual theatre. The muted part was expressive and comical thanks to the well-trained actors (us) and the international mime techniques (let’s say Laurel and Hardy, or Mr. Bean, well-known classical muted comedy). But of course, our theatre had even serious nuances. So it was even a mixture of multiple genres, comic, documentary, and even a little bit of drama at the end along with the death of our main character. This happened because our purpose was for our play to be as appealing as possible. Our play had lots of nuances focusing its light on theatre, but mixed and molded with other types of arts, it managed to be original, historically correct, and engaging.
